During the last 7 days I got 3 Messenger requests about importance of over 5 years of professional experience to get Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa in Digital Technologies. And also, some people were asking about getting Exceptional Promise visa with 8+ years of work in tech. Let’s try to answer the latest of the requests together.
Applicant for Tech Nation Visa – January, 30, 10:21 AM
I have 10 years of DevOps experience, and I’m a Certified in AWS, Docker and Kubernetes.
Currently I work at The Company as Principal Software Engineer DevOps. Does my profile suit Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa (particularly, Exceptional Promise)?

Hi, thanks for your question. I think your background is truly great and is completely good as a basis for Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa.
But, as you can find in Tech Nation Visa Guidelines, the main point in this visa route is not just amount of years you are working somewhere in a well-known organisation.
You must demonstrate how you will improve UK tech ecosystem if you will have this visa. I mean what UK will gain if you come here? Just a new employee to some company – it is good but believe me, it is not a very strong position.
You must provide some plan of what you will do here with your great professional experience and knowledge. Ideas about starups, open-source projects, speaking at tech conferences, mentoring or something like that.
You have to write your plans in Personal Statement (as well as a brief about your existing experience that will be your foundation for future achievements).
The second part of the question is about relevance of many-many years of tech experience for Exceptional Promise visa route. Short answer – number of years does not influence too much on your visa route.
As I have already mentioned in a couple of my blog posts, in my own story I went through this way.
When I applied a couple years ago, I had 5+ years of web development (and 3+ years of mobile development). But I applied for Exceptional Promise. Why that? Because I believe that my biggest achievements in Digital Technologies are ahead. And my professional completion as a Senior Software Engineer is not the final goal of myself.
That is why, only you can feel are you a Talent or Promise. Think about readiness to move further (or are you already in a good destination where you want to stay in professional life)? If you are the first one and think about new tech adventures – you have to apply for Promise. If you are already hiding your Nobel Prize in Digital Technologies (joke :)) – you are Exceptional Talent.
So if you will have any other questions – let me know either here with Messenger or via email. Good luck with your visa application!
