Police Registration of Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa Recipient

Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa Recipients, who are Citizens of some countries must register on arrival to the United Kingdom

Question: “Hi Andrei, I am from China. I got my Endorsement and also visa in the passport, but it says that “Register with Police in 7 days of UK entry”. As I understand, I must provide my home address and proof of job. But I am not sure that I will find a permanent flat so quickly. And also I am a freelancer now and not looking for any job in the UK. What can I do with this?”

Answer: we are pretty lucky with you since I am also from the country that is not entirely trustful for the UK. Hence, the citizens of these countries must register at the police in a period between week or two. Precise time is stated in every individual visa.

In my case, I came to London in November. It was a month when many students on Tier 4 General visa from the same list of countries must register. Hence, I had long queues and hours of waiting at the Police Station at Borough High Street. Its official title isĀ The Overseas Visitors Records Office (OVRO).

Basically, the procedure is the following: you come to the Police Station, you get your ticket with a number and then wait till your number is called. In jam-packed days, you will get your ticket for a couple of days in advance (I came on November 12 but got the ticket for November 21).

That is why I believe that you must make your first, introductory visit to the mentioned Police Station and speak with the police officer about your circumstances.

You definitely cannot register without the UK address. So be ready that the police officer may allow you to postpone your registration until you find a permanent place.

The job is not a problem at all and is not strictly required. Moreover, you will always have an option to register a change in your status (finding a new job is one of the reasons you must go to your local police to log the change).

But I am sure nobody on the Internet can provide you with appropriate advice so go to the Police and you will get your answer.

By the way, the police officers there are quite friendly and understanding the difficulties. I found them supporting and got mainly positive feedback about OVRO.

At the same time, if you need support and do not feel strong enough to go there by yourself, I can introduce you to lawyers and they can help you with your question. Let me know if you need their assistance.
