8 alarming mistakes of Exceptional Talent Visa applicants

Mistakes are predictable on every Tech Nation Visa journey

I am not joking. Below I prepared a list of eight dangerous quotes sent to me within the emails by my blog readers. Also, a couple of them are generalised sentences from Personal Statements drafted by potential Exceptional Talent Visa applicants. In significant cases, later on, all of these visa applications become just numbers in total statistics of Endorsement refusals, and these people are in the army of unsuccessful visa applicants.

So why I am publishing this list? To caution you about the typical mistakes and to supersede your potentially harmful thoughts by short, constructive ideas on how to avoid these mistakes to get UK Exceptional Talent Visa.

1. Unique and extraordinary people

“I am a unique person. It’s not just because my parents say so. I got different endorsements at the University as a hardworking student and participated in local hackathons. Last year I talked at the conference about my Technology, and my Github profile is well followed…”

Tip: By the way, I checked the Github profile of this person – less than 20 followers. And approximately the same amount of commits during the last year. However, this problem is not the main topic of my blog, but sometimes, self-critique is one of the essential characteristics. Try to look at yourself seriously. Do you believe that British investors and digital guru will be impressed with such a bright digital personality?

2. Digital Womanizing

“Since I am a woman and have a Diploma in Engineering, work over five years in the Digital International Company, I suggest it will not be a problem to get an Endorsement. STEM move (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is on rising now, so I think it doubles my chances.”

Tip: I get a couple of letters with very similar ideas from digital ladies, who believe that being a woman in tech is already a distinction. At least one of the ladies is not already feeling in this since her visa application was rejected. Please, do not bring too many hopes regarding the thought about gender imbalance when you think how to get Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa. I think in future we will get detailed statistics about the Tech Nation Visa route and it will show the male-female proportion of visa holders.

3. Brand Lovers

“A couple of years ago, I had a monthly internship at Google (Facebook, Amazon, etc.). I got great experience there, but due to bad luck, I failed to get a job in this big brand company. Anyway, this is in my CV, so, probably, it will do some favour for my Endorsement.”

Tip: One or three months of internship at a company with thousands of people in staff and transnational influence on digital technology is an excellent thing but… Companies with big names and loud titles influence on your Exceptional Talent Visa application only when you are now working there. However, in most cases, they are providing Tier 2 General Visa sponsorship, so there is no need to apply for talent visa. Also, well-known companies can bring benefits to your application if you worked there in your past (at least – for a couple of years). However, again – this is a very personal thing and differs in every case.

4. Learning never stops

“To demonstrate continuous learning, I can prove that I’ve already completed all the courses in Coursera and Udacity about digital marketing and growth hacking (totally 13 courses).”

Tip: Your completed courses are a real reason for proud but without any practical implementation of your learning results into work is nothing. It is a pure “certificates-hunt”. And, please, don’t tell me that you are a person who just likes to learn new and discover unknown horizons.

Every certificate attached to the Exceptional Talent Visa Application has to be supported by your existing experience. 5. Future Unicorn LTD

“I have an idea of a unicorn startup. This is like a new Facebook (Google, Uber, Petiole) with some elements of LinkedIn but for blockchain experts with embedded VR experience and big data. My startup was selected to participate in the Cool Accelerator Program in London.”

Tip: This is one of the most apparent but very typical problems. We all believe that our projects will have over one billion valuations and join The Unicorn List and The Billion Dollar Startup Club.

However, to manipulate your reputation as a founder of the future big company, you need to show what you have now. The pure idea is not relevant for endorsement; you need to have existing positive results and a clear plan for your future.

I mean that you cannot declare your startup as a future unicorn when it has ten users or you are still on the idea stage and looking for a co-founder for your digital adventure.

6. Minions of Investors

“I got signed a secured investment agreement from angel investors in London who are ready to give me money for my startup.”

Tip: in general, there is nothing wrong with this statement, but it has to be presented in conjunction with other trusted documents and proofs.

Attaching the extract of such signed secured investment agreement is beneficial but, please, be so kind to provide also extract of your business plan activities for the next couple of years and other documents to show the full picture about your startup.

Yes, a couple of representatives in the Endorsement Panel are investors and can assess your documents with a quick look. However, it is your obligation to provide as many details as possible to be a trusted person and get an Endorsement.

7. Stop slavery

I am an employee with Tier 2 sponsorship provided by my current employer. I want to be free and choose my future employers by myself, not because of visa sponsorship.

Tip: this honest and very sensitive paragraph will bring endorsement to refusal and the whole visa application – to rejection.

Please, remember the golden rule (or rule of thumb – whenever name you prefer): Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa route is not a substitution of the Tier 2 General Visa route. Your argument about freedom is not related to unique and exceptional professional skills at all.

You must provide more interesting and well-reasoned thoughts about why the UK will get more benefits from you as an Exceptional Talent Visa holder.

8. Over-experienced guys want Exceptional Talent Visa too

“I am a certified expert in Technology. I got a Computer Science degree at the University and have 15+ years of experience in Digital Technology. What I need to apply – Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise (or I am too old for Promise)?”

Tip: the question is not even about choosing your route between talent and promise but do you need to apply for this visa at all? What extraordinary skill set do you have and what exactly the UK digital industry will gain out of your experience?

The real number of years of your work and a list of professional certifications is good for job-seeking but Tech Nation Visa. Hence, you need to think broader and give more reasons for Tech Nation to trust in your talent.

    I run a software testing firm from 2017 onwards and my firm is doing well. Prior to 2017, I was working in different organisations and have got an overall experience of 14 years in the IT Industry.

      Thank you for your question.
      There are many factors which influence the positive answer on your dilemma about Promise or Talent visa application. But this is one of the most frequent questions for prospect applicants.
      Number of years, that you have spent in the digital technologies, does not influence on the choice decisively. The main point is your own feeling: have you already achieved your top-level and now can only scale your own brand? Does your success is financially supported by good earnings? If your answer is “yes” then you are, probably, a Talent and already a leader of tech industry. If not – you are a promising expert so need to choose Exceptional Promise route.
